Vice-county of Castillon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The vice-county of Castillon was in southwestern France. The center was the place Castillon-sur-Dordogne (today Castillon-la-Bataille). The importance of the vice-county, attested since the 10th century, consisted in securing the passage over the Dordogne .

The family of the vice-counts lost the rule due to a rebellion of the Barons Guyennes against Simon IV. De Montfort . At the end of the 13th century, Castillon came to Jean de Grailly. His descendants ruled Castillon - with a brief interruption due to the conflict between England and France - into the 16th century.

The successor to the Grailly family was La Tour d'Auvergne (Turenne) from the middle of the 16th century , and the Castillon in 1719 to Antoine Bonnet de Talmont, who in turn passed it on to André François Benoit Leberthon, premier président au parlement de Bordeaux in 1731. His son André Leberthonv lost his sovereign rights during the French Revolution and sold Castillon in 1795.
