Kristina Kanders

Kristina Kanders (* 1962 in Cologne ) is a German artist and former musician .

Life

Kanders is a daughter of the singer Agnes Giebel . During her school days she concentrated on painting before turning to drums after graduating from high school. In 1987 Kanders went to New York to study (1992 Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the Parsons School of Design, 1997 Master of Arts Degree from Queens College ). She studied u. a. with Ron Carter , Jimmy Heath , Kenwood Dennard , Jojo Mayer , Bernard Purdie , Kenny Werner and Jim Hall . From 1994 to 2005 Kanders taught at New School University .

From New York, Kanders performed at concerts, festivals and radio broadcasts in the US and Europe between 1987 and 2005, including Cyro Baptista's Beat the Donkey (Big Bang Percussion Festival) (including Carre / Amsterdam, Phillipszaal / Maastricht, Vredenburg / Den Haag, Vooruit / Gent, Jazz Festival Willisau , Switzerland; Guimaraes Jazz Festival, Culturgest, Lisbon, Portugal; New York appearances with Baptista at the Guggenheim Museum , NY Stock Exchange, Bowery Ball Room, Tonic, Brooklyn Museum ; Central Park / Summerstage ; SOB's and Knitting Factory . Special guests were John Zorn , Marc Ribot , David Brosa and Cibo Mato.). With her own band Sambanditos she played a. a. at Madison Square Garden, Carnegie Hall , Lincoln Center , the Museum of Modern Art , Princeton University , Museo del Barrio, and several United Nations events as well as the Pori Jazz Festival. She also played with the Kit McClure Big Band, Joe McGinty, Huevos Rancheiros, Boo Trundle, Maria Excommunikata.

Kanders has been living in Cologne again since 2005. From 2006 to 2009 she regularly played drums for Frank Köllge's Adam Noidlt Missiles Orchestra . In 2008 her solo debut album For All People was released . In 2010 she released her second CD Say Something . More music and art videos and art exhibitions followed. Her videos Say Something and Human Rights were shown internationally at the CologneOff VIII Videoart Festival (including USA, India, Russia, Iceland, Hungary, Mexico, Argentina, Morocco, Spain). Since 2012 she has completely shifted her creative focus to the visual arts. From 2014 Kanders will concentrate on the series Disappearing Housewives , for which a catalog was published in 2019.
