Myriam Thyes (* 1963 in Luxembourg ) is a Luxembourg- Swiss media artist . She lives and works in Düsseldorf .

biography

Myriam Thyes grew up in Zurich , after graduating from higher education, attended the basic year of the Higher School for Design Zurich (now ZHdK) and studied painting with Rissa and video art with Nan Hoover at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1986 to 1992 . In 1990 she received a six-month scholarship at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. She completed her studies with the academic degree “ master student ”.

Myriam Thyes has been participating in international exhibitions and festivals since 1994. Since 1999 she has been working primarily digitally in the areas of video art , 2D animation , photo montage and vector graphics . Since 2000 she has also been realizing media art projects in public space: Among other things , she was co-founder of the artist group 'Strictly Public', which was invited to participate in the Berlin media art festival transmediale .04 in 2004. Strictly Public already showed video art in 2000 and 2001 in subway stations in North Rhine-Westphalia and in 2002 at 26 main train stations across Germany. The Swiss art foundation Pro Helvetia supported her solo exhibitions and participations in exhibitions from 2004 to 2016. Since 2005, Thyes has been invited to several urban screens conferences on media art in public spaces.

Well-known - and regularly shown in exhibitions and festivals - is her participatory project 'Flag Metamorphoses', a series of Flash animations on the subject of flags that has been growing since 2005 and addresses relationships between countries; Artists from many countries contributed their own animations.

Myriam Thyes works on the analysis and reevaluation of known symbols. The artist uses symbols from politics (mainly flags and world maps), architecture, religions (e.g. Yin & Yang) as well as mythical figures from Hollywood films and female figures from cultures from many countries and epochs. Thyes processes the social and psycho-social effects of widespread symbols and myths using drawings, digital collages, video and animation. The signs undergo transformation, dissolve, begin to communicate and enter into new relationships with one another. Quote Thyes: "Symbols for identities become elements of dialogues."

Myriam Thyes is a member of the German Association of Artists , where she is represented with six works in the video collection of the DKB project Video Archive , which was started in 2007 .
