The İstanbul Modern is a museum for contemporary art in Beyoğlu , the İstanbul district on the European side of İstanbul .

The opening was on December 11, 2004.

Originally located in the center of the city on Karaköy Pier , the building from the 1950s had 8000 m² of exhibition space. After the opening, the museum's collection consisted of foundations from Nejat Eczacıbaşı and Oya and Bülent Eczacıbaşı and the collections of Türkiye Bank , Mimar Sinan University and the Museum of Painting and Sculpture . The museum presents contemporary art of international standing in temporary exhibitions.

The museum is now located at 99 Meşrutiyet Caddesi (north of İstiklal Caddesi ) following the demolition of the entire waterfront in favor of the construction of a cruise terminal in Karaköy .
