The Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts ( German : Mimar Sinan University ) is a state university in the Istanbul district of Fındıklı. Yalçın Karayağız has been the rector of the university since 2010.

history

After the establishment of the institution on January 1, 1882 by Osman Hamdi Bey as the "School of Fine Arts" ( Mekteb-i Sanayi-i Nefise-i Şâhâne or Sanayi-i Nefise Mektebi for short ) it was the first of its kind in Turkey and took on March 2, 1883, eight professors and twenty students began teaching fine arts and architecture. In 1914 the school became co-educational . In 1928 it received the status of an academy , changed its name to "Academy of Fine Arts" ( Güzel Sanatlar Akademisi ) and was the first academy in Turkey. In 1969 it was renamed the "Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts" ( İstanbul Devlet Güzel Sanatlar Akademisi , İDGSA). On July 20, 1982 it received the status of a university and was named after the architect Sinan "Mimar Sinan University" ( Mimar Sinan Üniversitesi ). In December 2003 the administration changed the name to “Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts” ( Mimar Sinan Güzel Sanatlar Üniversitesi ).
