Ümit Serdaroğlu

Ümit Serdaroğlu (* 1932 in Istanbul ; † September 23, 2005 ibid) was a Turkish classical archaeologist and architect .

Life

Serdaroğlu studied at Ankara University , where he received his doctorate in Classical Archeology under Ekrem Akurgal in 1964 with a thesis on The Ionian Architecture of the Archaic Period . From 1964 to 1966 he was on a scholarship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at Heidelberg University . He then studied architecture again in Ankara, which made the restoration of old buildings his second field of activity alongside archeology.

Since 1978 he has been Professor of Restoration at Ege Üniversitesi in İzmir , since 1983 Professor of Architectural History and Restoration at the Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts in Istanbul, he has also been at Çanakkale University since 1994 and at Maltepe Üniversitesi since 2000 active in Istanbul.

He participated in excavations and research in Ağın , Bayraklı , Bodrum , Daskyleion , Euromos , Kalaycık , Kyzikos , Phokaia and Pitane . He also carried out numerous restoration projects in Akdamar , Assos , Bodrum, Bursa , Çanakkale , Istanbul and İzmir . His most important research, however, was directed to the ancient city of Assos in the Troas , whose excavations he led since 1981. He is buried here too.
