Ernst Dassmann

Ernst Dassmann (born January 30, 1931 in Coesfeld ) is a German church historian , patrologist and Christian archaeologist .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1951, Ernst Dassmann studied Catholic theology in Coesfeld in Münster and Munich. In 1957 he was ordained a priest . In the winter semester 1963/64 he received his doctorate with the work of the piety of the church father Ambrose of Milan at the Catholic Theological Faculty in Münster Dr. theol. In 1969 he completed his habilitation in Münster with the scripture forgiveness of sins through baptism, penance and intercession for martyrs in the testimonies of early Christian piety and art . Dassmann was a student of Bernhard Kötting at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster and thus belonged to the so-called Dölger School.

He has been a member of the Görres Society since 1967 . In 1969, he received a call , succeeding Karl building , to the Chair of Ancient Church History , Patrology and Christian archeology at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-University of Bonn . From 1972 to 2001 Dassmann, as the successor to Theodor Klauser , was also director of the Franz Joseph Dölger Institute for the Study of Late Antiquity . Since his retirement in 1996 he has taught ancient church history at the Gustav Siewerth Academy .

Dassmann was editor from 1972 to 2001, since 1984 chief editor of the Real Lexicon for Antiquity and Christianity (RAC) sponsored by the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts , and from 1973 to 2001 editor of the Yearbook for Antiquity and Christianity . He is also the editor of the Hereditas series .

Dassmann has been a full member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts (class for humanities) and a full member of the German Archaeological Institute DAI since 1980 .

Ernst Dassmann was appointed papal honorary prelate by Pope John Paul II in 1996.

Ernst Dassmann's research areas include the life and work of the church fathers Paul, Ambrosius and Augustine. He is considered one of the most profound experts on Augustine worldwide.
