Karl Baus

Karl Baus (born September 18, 1904 in Schmelz (Saar) ; † September 30, 1994 ibid) was a Catholic church historian and patrologist .

Life

He studied Catholic theology in Innsbruck from 1924 to 1929 and was ordained a priest on August 4, 1929 in Trier. Then he was chaplain in Koblenz . In 1935 he became a religion teacher and in 1937 rector at the grammar school on Nonnenwerth . On September 7, 1939 he received his doctorate in Bonn to become Doctor theologiae . Because of difficulties with the National Socialists, he was sent from 1939 to 1944 to study at the Campo Santo Teutonico in Rome, where he met Hubert Jedin , to whose handbook of church history he later contributed the volumes on the Old Church. When he returned to Germany, he fell ill, so that he was only able to take on a lectureship at the Trier seminary in 1949 and at the newly founded theological faculty in Trier in 1950 . Here he completed his habilitation on October 1, 1952; on August 1, 1953, he was appointed full professor for ancient church history and patrology and on November 1, 1962 at the University of Bonn . After his retirement at the end of the summer semester 1969, he returned to his home parish.
