Josef Engemann

Josef Engemann (born April 9, 1926 in Berlin ) is a German Christian archaeologist .

Josef Engemann first studied Catholic theology . In 1964 he was at the University of Cologne at Heinz Kahler in the subject Classical Archeology Dr. phil. PhD and then worked at the Franz Joseph Dölger Institute . From 1965 to 1998 he regularly took part in the excavation campaigns of the German Archaeological Institute in Abu Mena ( Egypt ).

In 1972 he completed his habilitation for Christian archeology at the University of Bonn and was appointed associate professor in 1975. Since 1978 he has headed the Christian Archeology Department in the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Bonn; In 1984 he was appointed to the newly created professorship for this subject, which he held until his retirement in 1991.

From 1984 to 2006 he was a member of the editorial boards of the Real Lexicon for Antiquity and Christianity and the Yearbook for Antiquity and Christianity . In 1991 he was President of the 12th International Congress for Christian Archeology in Bonn, 2004-2007 together with Alexander Demandt scientific director of the Constantine Exhibition in Trier . Engemann is a full member of the German Archaeological Institute , of which he was also a member.
