Shaolin Kempo is a martial art of Chinese origin that has been influenced by various Japanese karate systems. Shaolin Kempo, as practiced in Germany and the Netherlands, was founded by the Dutch Carl Faulhaber and Gerard Karel Meijers (also Dschero Khan ). It is closely related to Kung Fu and represents a style here alongside many others that have developed over the centuries. Gerard Karel Meijers founded his first private martial arts school in 1962. From this point on, Shaolin Kempo first spread in the Netherlands and from 1967 also in Germany.

Meaning of the name

The name "Shaolin" is based on the northern Chinese fighting style Chuan Su and in relation to the common synonym in the local provinces, Buddhist (Engl. Term for the so-called "hard" style hardstyle ) have been chosen. The term "Kempo" was intended to express the strong influence of the philosophical and meditative aspects of various karate systems, especially the Japanese Kempō .

Dragon style and Shaolin Kempo

The original elements of the Chinese dragon style are no longer present in large numbers in today's form of Shaolin Kempo, to speak of a classic dragon style. In Shaolin Kempo , the Chinese dragon is used symbolically for strength, agility and wisdom.

Practice practice

In the practice of Shaolin Kempo, kicks, punches, kicks as well as simple lever and throwing techniques are used. These are practiced in the form of kata and kumite , and there are also forms of free practice. Another important training content of Shaolin Kempo is self-defense . While beginners value a sensible, effective and situation-appropriate selection of simple self-defense techniques, advanced learners need a balance between lever, throwing, fist and foot techniques.

The aim of the training is the harmonious interplay of mental and physical aspects. At the same time, the practitioners get the opportunity to explore some of their own limits.

In addition, Shaolin Kempo as a martial art should make a contribution to the spiritual development of people. This means that skills such as responsibility, a positive attitude towards life and other people, or openness and honesty should be learned.

Graduations

As in many martial arts, belt degrees are also awarded in Shaolin Kempo. A distinction is made between the student grades ( Kyū ) and the master grades ( Dan ), each of these levels is assigned a belt color. Five Kyū degrees and ten Dan degrees are awarded, each student begins as a white belt (6th Kyū).

The preparation time here is between one and six years. In the case of Dan exams, in addition to a series of preparatory courses, participation in a first aid course is required.

Shaolin Kempo in Germany

Around 1967 the “Shaolin Kempo Community of Interest” was established in Germany by Hermann Scholz in Kleve . In 1973, the Dutch-German Chinese Kung Fu Association was founded with the participation of Gerard Karel Meijers . In the mid-1970s, the first Shaolin Kempo clubs joined official sports associations in the field of judo and karate . On December 6, 1981, the Shaolin Kempo Association NW was finally founded; this joined the umbrella association for Budotechniken North Rhine-Westphalia founded in 1982 .

In order to enable other Chinese systems to become members of the association, the name of the association was changed to "North Rhine-Westphalian Shaolin-Kempo / Kung Fu Association" in 1985 (this association later renamed itself to "Wushu Association NRW"). Also in 1985 the German Shaolin Kempo / Kung Fu Association was founded at the federal level. The German Wushu Federation was formed in 1988 through the merger with another association .

Shaolin Kempo is thus operated today in the "German Wushu Federation"; The association has its own Shaolin Kempo student body .
