The KunstFilmBiennale is an annual international film festival in the field of art film in Cologne .

Emergence

The KunstFilmBiennale was launched in 2002 by art critic , filmmaker and author Heinz Peter Schwerfel . The Cologne art film festival quickly developed into a recognized meeting place for the international scene of media artists . The festival is to be a "mixture of exhibition and festival, with short- and long international, experimental and narrative films, [...] with and junior competition , retrospectives and tributes ." The films are shown in cinemas , museums and galleries in Cologne and Bonn .

Prices

Various prizes are awarded within the KunstFilmBiennale . Mention should be made of the prize of the International Competition (PdIW) endowed with 15,000 euros from the Filmstiftung NRW and the Bild-Kunst-Förderpreis for experimental film (BKF) endowed with 25,000 euros. Both the award and the prize money can be shared among several artists. Within the international competition, the films also compete for the prize of the Association of German Film Critics (PdVddF). In 2009, for the first time, two audience prizes were awarded in the international competition of the KunstFilmBiennale. The Nico of the City of Cologne for films of 60 minutes or more (N Köln) and the Nico of the SK Stiftung Kultur for films up to 60 minutes (N Kultur), each endowed with 1,000 euros.

The jury is made up of experts from the fields of art , film and related sciences , who change each year . Jury members so far have included Gus van Sant , Julia Stoschek , Stephan Berg , Rolf Bier , Amira Casar , Harun Farocki , Gundolf S. Freyermuth , Isaac Julien , Michael Althen , Shirin Neshat , Marcel Odenbach , Daniel Kothenschulte , Bjørn Melhus .
