Heinz Peter Schwerfel

Heinz Peter Schwerfel (* 1954 in Cologne ) is a German art critic , filmmaker and author .

Vita

After studying philosophy and art history in Aachen and Paris (Sorbonne IV), Schwerfel, born in Cologne in 1954, worked in Paris from 1979 as a political editor at the French press agency AFP . From the early eighties he wrote as an art and film critic a. a. for Transatlantik , art - Das Kunstmagazin , Das Magazin der Zeit , Lui, Art Press , Beaux Arts Magazine , Filmkorrepondenz . Freelance work for Radio SWF 3 and television, where he worked regularly for the popular cinema program Etoiles et Toiles on the French TV channel TF 1, presented by Frédéric Mitterrand, who was responsible for interviews.

After working on a documentary about the American surrealist Man Ray (directed by Deidi von Schaewen , 1982), Schwerfel made numerous documentaries on contemporary art as a director and producer from 1985 and published several interview volumes in the series 'Art Today' (Kiepenheuer & Witsch. In 1989 he founded Artcore Film GmbH in Berlin and expanded his spectrum: in addition to artist portraits, there were fiction ('Tanguera', 'Artcore', 'Die Insschrift des Gottes'), theater (Christoph Marthaler), literature (Cees Nooteboom), design ( he invented the 'Design' series for Arte, which continued until 2011, as well as several filmic essays on free cultural topics, including with Jean Baudrillard, Peter Sloterdijk, Heiner Müller, Peter Ludwig etc.). Retrospectives of his films took place. a. in Paris (Center Pompidou), New York (Film Anthologies and MoMA) or Buenos Aires (Malba).

In 1998 Schwerfel went to Hamburg as deputy editor-in-chief of the art magazine ART for two years. He has published several books on contemporary art in Cologne's DuMont Buchverlag ('Kunst-Scandale', 'Kunst nach Ground Zero', 'Kino und Kunst'). In 2004 he moved to Buenos Aires for three years, where he made films for television and the Ministry of Culture, for example about the history of the Baroque in South America. About his stay in Argentina he wrote the city portrait "Buenos Aires intensive - Tango Urbano" (Kiepenheuer & Witsch). In 2002 he founded the KunstFilmBiennale in Cologne, a film festival for art and cinema, of which he was artistic director until 2010. In 2013, 'Kino der Kunst' followed in Munich, which was both a film festival and an art exhibition.

Schwerfel is married to the tango singer Silvana Deluigi and lives in Paris and Cologne.
