life and work

Deidi von Schaewen studied painting and graphic design at the Berlin University of the Arts .

After completing her studies, she first went on trips, where she received her first assignment in Barcelona . In collaboration with the American architect Peter Harnden, she took on the graphic design and showcases for a pavilion for Expo 67 in Montreal .

Then she traveled to southern Spain and photographed the then new Xanadu building by Ricardo Bofill . An exchange developed between the two artists, whereupon Bofill asked them to photograph all of his buildings. This formed the basis for her work as an architectural photographer. From 1960 she photographed architectural works by young artists in Barcelona.

Von Schaewen made a name for herself as an international architectural photographer and filmmaker. She photographs interiors, gardens and architecture worldwide and creates documentations in the form of photos and films.

Her works have been exhibited internationally in museums and galleries since 1974, including the Musée National d'Art Moderne (1974), Galerie Marian Goodman New York (1975), Center Georges-Pompidou (1977), Fondation Miro Barcelona (1982); Printemps de la Photo in Cahors (1994), Biennale d'Art Contemporain de Lyon (2001), Evergreen University, Olympia (2014), Rubin Museum New York (2016–2017).

As an author, she has published numerous illustrated books, some of which have also been published in English and French. She photographs all forms of architecture: from African mud huts to the most modern interiors and landscapes. Her work has also been featured in international magazines such as Vogue , Elle decoration and The World of Interiors .

Von Schaewen now lives in Paris.
