Kunst im Tunnel ( KIT ) is an underground exhibition center for contemporary art in Düsseldorf . This is a so-called residual tunnel space two meters below the Rhine bank promenade , which was created during the construction of the Rhine bank tunnel . The exhibition room is located in the immediate vicinity of the state parliament and the Rheinkniebrücke and was opened on February 10, 2007. The Kunsthalle Düsseldorf is responsible for running and organizing the exhibitions . Artistic director is currently (2019) Gertrud Peters.

architecture

The newly built entrance pavilion on the Rheinuferpromenade was built according to a design by the Düsseldorf architectural office “ Fritschi Architekten ”, which designed the Rheinuferpromenade, which was completed in 1995. The 130 m² building was glazed towards the Rhine and includes a small bistro. A staircase and a lift for the disabled lead down to the 888 m² underground exhibition area, which is located between the two tunnels for car traffic. The slightly curved tunnel space is 140 meters long and - tapering to a point - between eight and one meter wide. Two light shafts with armored glass have been created towards the surface.

Exhibitions

KIT is intended for exhibitions of contemporary art and is intended to complement the Düsseldorf exhibition landscape in a targeted manner. Works by young artists, graduates of the Düsseldorf Art Academy , but also by winners of the Düsseldorf Art Prize are shown. Four exhibitions per year are planned. As early as 2005, with the Academy Gallery, exhibition rooms for professors of the Art Academy were set up in the rooms of the former School of Applied Arts on Burgplatz . Long before the current renovation, the artists Jost Wischnewski and Jan Verbeek presented elaborate installations under the title LOS 2 in this remaining tunnel space for the first time in 1994 .
