Jojo Mayer

Sergé "JoJo" Mayer (born January 18, 1963 in Zurich ) is a Swiss drummer living in New York .

Life

The son of bassist Vali Mayer got his first drums at the age of two, and his first public appearance followed a year later in Hong Kong . He acquired his skills largely self-taught . At the age of 18 he was engaged in Monty Alexander's band and toured major European festivals such as the North Sea Jazz Festival , Montreux , Nice and Antibes . As a sideman he played with a variety of well-known musicians from a wide variety of musical genres. In 1995 he was a member of the Screaming Headless Torsos .

Since 1998 he has played in the New York band Nerve , with whom he transfers the improvisational spontaneity of jazz to the drum and bass genre . He is also the initiator and producer of the music party «Prohibited Beatz». Until he left in 2013 he was a member of the Austrian-Swiss jazz trio Depart , in whose founding formation (1985-1994) he was already a substitute for Fredy Studer , and with whom he recorded two new CDs after the comeback in 2006. In honor of Buddy Rich (25 Years Anniversary Buddy Rich) he played concerts with the Latvian Radio Big Band , with the Steinegg Live Big Band and in 2014 with the Zurich Jazz Orchestra .

Works

In 2007 he produced the DVD Secret weapons for the modern drummer , which shows techniques of playing drums, including the “Mayer Stroke” he developed. This was followed by the DVD Secret weapons for the modern drummer - Part 2 , on which he deals with his special foot technique.

Equipment

Jojo Mayer uses a Sonor drum set, Vic Firth sticks , Sabian cymbals and Evans heads. Together with Sonor he developed his own foot machine, which was presented to the public in 2012 .
