Vali Mayer

Valentin "Vali" Mayer (born February 28, 1936 in Zurich ) is a Swiss jazz musician ( double bass , banjo , piano, vocals).

Career

Mayer, an autodidact musician , began his career as a banjoist in 1952, first in his own group in the boarding school of the Trogen Cantonal School . Then he founded the Harlem Ramblers together with Heinz Fritz and Michel Robert . In 1956 he was hired by Albert Nicholas to Paris, where he worked with an ad hoc band until the end of the year. In 1957 he worked as a pianist before becoming a member of the house trio of the Tabou jazz club as a bassist and accompanying numerous American guest musicians.

When he switched to bass, he also turned to modern jazz . In 1960 he was successful with The Latins in Italy and got his own television show; their version of La Bamba has sold around a million times. From 1980 he was the constant companion of Häns'che Weiss until his illness in July 2016.

Mayer presents his more than 60 years of stage experience in the solo program Bass so low .

Since 2014 he has been leading the band with the other long-standing colleagues of Häns'che under the name Gypsy Dynasty . Since 2017 Vali Mayer has also been on the road in a guitar special with Bireli Lagrene .

The drummer Jojo Mayer is his son; his daughter the actress and singer Delia Mayer .
