Hans'che Weiss

Häns'che Weiss (* 1951 in Berlin ; † June 2, 2016 ) was a German jazz musician ( guitarist ), composer and interpreter of gypsy jazz in the tradition of Django Reinhardt .

Live and act

Weiss learned the basics of guitar playing in the family. In December 1969 Schnuckenack Reinhardt brought the solo guitarist into his quintet. Three years later, in September 1972, he founded the “Häns'che Weiss Quintett”, which emerged from the (old) “Schnuckenack Reinhardt Quintet”. It consisted of Häns'che Weiss (solo guitar), Titi Winterstein (1956–2008, violin ), Holzmanno Winterstein (until 1976) or Lulu Reinhardt (rhythm guitar), Ziroli Winterstein (1954–2007, rhythm guitar) and Hojok Merstein ( double bass )

In 1978 the ensemble received the German Record Award for their fourth album, 5 Years of Music from German Gypsies . This album also includes the first political track by a Sinti musician, Lass Maro Tschatschepen (“Let's demand our rights”). Weiss broke up the formation that was committed to the sound of the Quintette du Hot Club de France and from 1980 tried to break new ground in music. Titi Winterstein's position in his quartet or trio (from 1980 to 1994) was taken by his nephew Martin Weiss .

From 1980 the Swiss bass player Vali Mayer became Weiss' constant companion. With him, the repertoire expanded into other, more modern styles of jazz and Latin American music. Weiss now also composed Brazilian bossas and jazz ballads . The trio (Häns'che and Martin Weiss, Vali Mayer) now enjoyed worldwide success under the name of the Häns'che Weiss Ensemble . In 1994, Häns'che Weiss separated from his nephew Martin and performed in a duo with Vali Mayer for the next ten years. Then his great-nephew Micky Bamberger joined the piano. Holzmanno Winterstein soon joined the new trio as a rhythm guitarist.

This quartet existed until Weiss fell seriously ill in 2014. He did not recover from this illness and died in June 2016.
