Titi Winterstein

Titi Winterstein (* 25. October 1956 ; † 13. June 2008 in Offenburg ) was a German jazz musician ( violinist ) and one of the most important representatives of German Sinti - Swing . He spent his childhood in Mainz on the Hartenberg .

Winterstein trained with his father Tokeli Winterstein , one of the few survivors of the Nazi Holocaust in his family, with 8 years of guitar ; later the violin was added. In 1965, at the end of the Sinti pilgrimage in Illingen , he appeared for the first time. 1972 brought guitarist Häns'che Weiss , who was the group of violinist Schnuckenack Reinhardt had left, the then 15-year-old in his newly founded quintet in the classic Hot Club duty system violin , solo guitar, two rhythm guitars andDouble bass , where the “ child prodigy ” quickly caused a sensation and was also able to perform internationally.

In 1978 Winterstein founded his own ensemble (initially as a quintet, including with Lulu Reinhardt and his cousin Ziroli Winterstein ), with which he released six albums and starred in an SDR television film "Saitenstraßen".

In addition, Winterstein was also politically active, taking part in Fritz Raus Grüner Raupe in the 1983 federal election campaign and in the Stuttgart-Ulm human chain initiated by the peace movement .

In 1993 he was invited by Yehudi Menuhin to the event "All the world's violins" in Brussels , where he performed with numerous greats in his field such as Stephane Grappelli . In May 2003, Titi Winterstein was awarded the Django Reinhardt Prize on the occasion of a performance at the “European Festival of Roma and Sinti Music” in the Berlin House of World Cultures .
