Guilherme Franco

Guilherme Franco (born November 25, 1946 in São Paulo ; † November 12, 2016 ibid) was a Brazilian percussionist who became known in both jazz and world music .

Live and act

Franco moved to the United States, where he has performed with Keith Jarrett's American quartet since 1974 ; later he belonged to the Paul Winter Consort . In the early 1990s he was a member of Don Pullen's African-Brazilian Connection . He has also recorded with Teresa Brewer , Lonnie Liston Smith , McCoy Tyner , Lonnie Liston Smith, Elvin Jones , Woody Shaw , Terumasa Hino , Carlos Garnett , Arthur Blythe , Lee Konitz , Gato Barbieri , Ivo Perelman and Oscar Castro-Neves .

He also founded a samba school and the Samba group Pe de Boi in New York City in 1981 , which also performed with David Byrne . In 1998 he recorded the solo album Capoeira: Legendary Music of Brazil , on which he played most of the instruments himself.
