Dorival Caymmi (born April 30, 1914 in Salvador da Bahia , † August 16, 2008 in Rio de Janeiro ) was one of the most important Brazilian musicians .

Life

The son of an Italian immigrant and a black Baiana wrote numerous classics of the Música Popular Brasileira (MPB) such as O Samba da Minha Terra , Saudade de Bahia , Rosa Morena , Promessa de Pescador and O Vento .

Although he celebrates Bahia and its people in his songs and is the epitome of Bahian culture in the Brazilian consciousness, he moved to Rio de Janeiro early on , where he was successful in the 1930s and has stayed since then. He composed his first successful pieces for the singer Carmen Miranda , including O Que é Que a Baiana Tem? . For five decades he composed, played guitar, sang and directed bands and orchestras. For many musicians of the Bossa Nova , the subsequent Tropicalismo and the MPB, he was one of the most influential musicians. For example, Gal Costa recorded an album in 1976, Gal Canta Caymmi , with Caymmi songs.

He had a friendship with the famous writer Jorge Amado , which lasted until his death.

Dorival Caymmi died on August 16, 2008. The singer Nana Caymmi and the songwriter and guitarist Dori Caymmi are his children.
