Tommy Williams is an American modern jazz bassist .

Williams was born in Brooklyn, New York around 1934. He appeared on the jazz scene in 1959 when he accompanied the singer Carmen McRae together with the pianist Dick Katz . In mid 1960 he replaced Addison Farmer in the Art Farmer / Benny Golson Jazztet and worked on his albums Big City Sounds , as well as The Jazztet & John Lewis and Jazztet at Birdhouse . Williams was a member of the Jazztet until the end of 1961 and was replaced by Herbie Lewis . He has also appeared on Golson and Farmers with solo projects this time, as on the albums Take a Number from 1 to 10 of Golson and Art and Perception of Art Farmer.

In November 1960 he worked with Jay Jay Johnson and Kai Winding and played on the first album of the newly founded jazz label Impulse! Records ( The Great Kai & JJ ). In 1961 he played in the Blue Mitchell Orchestra ( Smooth in the Wind ). From 1962 Williams worked with Stan Getz ; he played on his legendary Bossa Nova albums Getz / Gilberto at the side of Antônio Carlos Jobim and João Gilberto as well as on Jazz Samba Encore with the Luiz Bonfá Orchestra. Williams died on February 20, 1963 of an aneurysm .
