Wittekind linden tree

The Wittekind lime tree is a natural monument in the village of Elbrinxen in the Weser Uplands in the Lippe district . The summer lime tree ( Tilia platyphyllos ) stands on the lower part of the cemetery facing the village on a location raised by about two meters by the Protestant church. It can be seen from afar, stands in the middle of an old abandoned burial ground (northeast is the former Jewish cemetery Elbrinxen ) and is rooted in deep clay. The tree has a strong trunk that branches out into two main axes at a height of about three to four meters, of which several vertical axes extend upwards. The crown is oval and harmonious. The total height of the linden tree is more than 30 meters with a crown diameter of around 25 meters. In the Guinness Book of Records , at 1000 years old, it was temporarily listed as the oldest linden tree in Germany.

In the middle of the 19th century, the crown was so badly damaged by a violent storm that it had to be cut. Around 1860, Elisabeth Fürstin zur Lippe had iron bands attached and the eight remaining branches braced with iron bars. In the 1950s the crown was trimmed again. During a renovation in 1959, the iron bands were removed and the treetop was stabilized by a system of steel cables. The cost of a renewed renovation in 1973 amounted to 6,000 German marks .

The linden tree has reached the height of its vigor. Within ten years it has grown by around four centimeters annually, more than any other comparable linden tree in Germany. In 1992 the trunk was 1.3 meters high and 9.3 meters in circumference. In 2000 the circumference of the trunk at the point of its smallest diameter was 9.48 meters and at a height of 10.40 meters. Measurements in 2008 showed a circumference of 9.66 meters at the point of the smallest diameter and 10.70 meters at a height of one meter. The chest height is 10.30 m (2016). According to the German Tree Archives , for which the trunk circumference at a height of one meter is the most important selection criterion, the linden tree is above the lower limit value, the nationally significant trees (NBB). The age of the linden tree is given in the literature as 320 to 500 and 800 to 900 years.
