Keith Shadwick

Keith Shadwick (born October 31, 1951 in Hampstead (London) , † July 28, 2008 ) was a British musician , A&R manager, broadcaster , author and music journalist .

Shadwick grew up in Australia , where his parents immigrated in 1961, and attended Wollongong High School in New South Wales ; he then studied English literature at Sydney University . After graduating in 1973 he played as a saxophonist in jazz and rock groups, musically influenced by John Coltrane , Ornette Coleman , Eric Dolphy and Jimi Hendrix . He also began to write for music magazines, had a regular program on a Melbourne radio station and wrote poetry. In 1972 he recorded an album with his jazz rock band Sun ; then he played in the Melbourne rock band Bleeding Hearts ( What Happened!, 1976).

After his return to England in 1978, Shadwick worked in London as the editor of Music Trades International Magazine , from 1984 as a buyer for classical productions at the WHSmith chain , and as a consultant for the series The Great Composers . In 1985 he became head of marketing at RCA Classics , took care of the revival of the record company's back catalog and was responsible for promoting British artists such as Julian Bream and Julian Lloyd Webber . In the late 1980s he was involved in the reorientation of the RCA towards jazz productions and hired artists such as Dave O'Higgins' Roadside Picnic and the pianist Jason Rebello . In 1989 he became managing director of Koch International . In 1992 Shadwick left the music industry and worked as a freelance writer for the music magazine Gramophone , for the broadcaster Classic FM , wrote jazz reviews for TOP magazine and worked for The Tower Jazz Guide (1999).

Shadwick wrote from 1997 for The Independent and the music magazine Jazzwise ( The 100 Jazz Albums That Shook the World 2006); This was followed by a series of musician and band biographies about Bill Evans (2002), Jimi Hendrix (2003) and Led Zeppelin (2005). Shortly before his death from a mesothelioma disease, he published the two volumes of poetry Before I Left and Just Here as well as a solo album, Free Time , partly with previously unpublished material from the 1970s. that appeared on Candid Records .
