The Rising is the 12th studio album by rock musician Bruce Springsteen , released in 2002. Besides the fact that it was his first studio album in seven years, he recorded an album with the E Street Band for the first time in 18 years . The album reflects Springsteen's impressions of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States .
With The Rising , Springsteen won three Grammys in 2003 in the categories of Best Rock Album , Best Male Vocal Performance - Rock and Best Rock Song .
history
Most of the tracks on the album were written after September 11, 2001, a few before. My City of Ruins was originally written and published through Asbury Park , New Jersey . Springsteens played this title on America: A Tribute to Heroes television event, where viewers could donate for the victims and relatives of the attacks. Further On (Up the Road) was played and professionally recorded at Madison Square Garden during his 2000 reunion tour with the E Street Band, but was not included in the release of Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band - Live in New York City (CD and DVD). Waiting on a Sunny Day was written in the 1990s. The track Nothing Man dates back to 1994, but was re-recorded for the album.
Mary's Place is directly inspired by Sam Cooke's Meet Me at Mary's Place , Let's Be Friends is based on John Mellencamp's Cherry Bomb and Mariah Carey's Dreamlover , and My City of Ruins is a throwback to Curtis Mayfield's People Get Ready .
