Darkness on the Edge of Town is a studio album that Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band released in 1978. It was released three years after Born to Run , Springsteen's first commercially successful album.

General

The album was only released three years after the successful previous album Born to Run , because in the meantime there were legal disputes with his manager at the time, who obtained an injunction that Springsteen was not allowed to work in the studio. This dispute was about incorrect billing of royalties.

While the losers were the focus in Born to Run , Springsteen discovered the working class on this album, people who have little and are threatened with losing what little ( Soon as you've got something they send someone to try and take it away, ... ).

Although the album did not include a hit single ( Prove It All Night # 33; Badlands # 42), the album stayed in the charts for 97 weeks and peaked at # 5 on the Billboard 200. It was listed at number 151 on its list of the 500 best albums of all time by Rolling Stone Magazine . The NME (New Musical Express) voted it the best album of 1978.

In 2010 the album was released with Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ , The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle , Born to Run and the three following studio albums in the CD box set The Collection 1973-84 .

Unused material

Tracks

During the recording sessions for Darkness on the Edge of Town , significantly more tracks were recorded than were ultimately released on the album. Some of the unused songs became hits for other artists: Because the Night for Patti Smith , Fire for Robert Gordon and The Pointer Sisters , Rendezvous for Greg Kihn, This Little Girl for Gary US Bonds . Southside Johnny recorded other tracks that appeared on his album Hearts of Stone .

Other songs ( Independence Day , Point Blank , The Ties That Bind , Sherry Darling ) appeared on Springsteen's album The River .

Many of the original recordings were released over the years. The 4-CD box of Tracks contains several pieces that came from the Darkness on the Edge of Town sessions . From 2009, Bruce Springsteen then prepared the release of further out-takes.

The Promise

The Promise: The Darkness on the Edge of Town Story , a box with three CDs and DVDs each , was released on November 16, 2010 . CD 1 contains a digitally edited version of Darkness on the Edge of Town , CD 2 and 3 contain, under the title The Promise 21, unpublished and partly edited tracks from the recording session. The DVDs contain a documentary about the making of Darkness as well as two concert recordings (Paramount Theater in Asbury Park, New Jersey, 2009). The third DVD ( Houston '78 Bootleg: House Cut ) shows a concert from the Darkness on the Edge of Town tour.

“The most fun was finding the music when we put the whole thing back together, which we worked really hard on back then, but which didn't fit on the record. The songs actually make their own album. They were arranged very carefully and so much was just lying around over the past 30 years. It was great to put everything together and show it to the fans. "

The recordings previously published on tracks are largely absent on The Promise . In addition to the original album, around 30 additional tracks from the recording sessions have now been officially released.
