Devils & Dust is the thirteenth studio album by US rock singer Bruce Springsteen . After Nebraska and The Ghost of Tom Joad , it is his third pure folk album. In Europe it was released on April 25, 2005.
General
The title song is about a soldier at war. It can be assumed that it is an American soldier in the Iraq war . Most of the songs have troubled souls on the subject. As with the albums Nebraska and The Ghost of Tom Joad , Springsteen was inspired by the American West. Another theme of the album are the relationships between mothers and their children, which is in contrast to earlier Springsteen motifs, where the focus was on father-son relationships.
The title Reno describes a sexual encounter with a prostitute in vivid detail , while Long Time Comin uses the word "fuck". Springsteen explained that Reno tells of a man who cannot overcome his despair over a lost wife with a prostitute and that the expression “fuck” in Long Time Comin should not be understood as a negative but as a positive affirmation (“I ain't gonna fuck it up this time ”).
The final piece, Matamoros Banks , is retrospective and shows the thoughts of a dying immigrant crossing the border into Mexico . It seems like the story from the song Across the Border from the album The Ghost of Tom Joad continues here.
With the release of the album the Devils & Dust Tour started.
Awards
Springsteen received five Grammy Award nominations for the album , three for the song Devils & Dust . But he could only win a Grammy in the category Best Solo Vocal Performance - Rock .

Bonus DVD
The bonus DVD included in the extended version of the edition contains the titles Devils & Dust , Long Time Comin ' , Reno , All I'm Thinkin' About and Matamoras Banks as filmed acoustic recordings, the Springsteen in the style of Nebraska alone on a chair plays. Short personal introductions by the artist are placed before the individual videos.
