Daniel Paul "Danny" Federici (born January 23, 1950 in Flemington , New Jersey , † April 17, 2008 in New York City , New York ) was an American musician . He celebrated his greatest successes with the E Street Band around the rock musician Bruce Springsteen .

Live and act

At the age of seven, like Bruce Springsteen , he was inspired by a television show to learn an instrument. Only in his case it wasn't the Ed Sullivan Show and not the guitar, but the Lawrence Welk Show and the accordion . In the late 1960s (probably for the first time 1967) he met Bruce Springsteen in Asbury Park , where many young musicians tried to stay afloat in various bands. Federici was already in Springsteen's rock band " Steel Mill ", later in the "Bruce Springsteen Band" and since the early 1970s as a founding member of the E Street Band . The band gave him his nickname "Phantom" because he always remained practically invisible on stage. In addition to the accordion, his instruments were the organ ( Vox Continental , Farfisa , Hammond B3 ) and occasionally the glockenspiel as in Badlands .

Federici celebrated many successes with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, the greatest certainly with the LP Born in the USA and the subsequent world tour in 1984/85. After Springsteen temporarily disbanded the E Street Band in 1989, Federici initially devoted himself entirely to his family. He later released an album called Flemington of instrumental jazz rock . A second album with similar pieces, Out of a Dream , followed in 2005.

It was around this time that he was diagnosed with a particularly dangerous form of skin cancer. At first, however, the public did not find out about this. Federici was involved in the recording of Bruce Springsteen's album Magic in 2007 and then toured the United States with the E Street Band. It was only towards the end of this first part of the Magic tour that it was announced that Federici would not be able to accompany the band to Europe for health reasons. Charles Giordano took his place. After the band returned to the USA, Federici played one last concert on March 20, 2008 in Indianapolis with the E Street Band, of which he had been a member for over 35 years.

Danny Federici died on April 17, 2008 at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City . He left behind his wife, a son and two daughters. Springsteen's next record, Working on a Dream , was dedicated to him.
