Meaning and reception

In 2003 the album was voted number 475 of the 500 best albums of all time by the American music magazine Rolling Stone . Rolling Stone gave the album 5 out of 5 stars; the critic Steve Pond first recalled the genesis of the album: "Bruce Springsteen met a woman, fell in love, married and made an album about meeting a woman, falling in love and getting married." Pond discusses different songs on the album and leaves especially on Walk Like a Man (at the end of the first page of the record), which in his opinion might be the most beautiful song that Springsteen wrote for his father. “There is the heart of the album: an uncertain journey on a dangerous, dark highway. The album doesn't sound like an easy trip - but it's been a long time since Bruce Springsteen wrote anything about free rides of any kind. One of the wonders of Tunnel of Love is that in the end it convinces us that the mysterious journey can be worth the effort ”.

The album received 4.5 out of 5 stars at Allmusic : Tunnel of Love is an album of “romantic exploration;” Song for song, sincerity and trust in a relationship and especially love marriage are questioned. The album was "a weak, painful endeavor" and songs like Cautious Man and Two Faces followed on from Nebraska . Even if Tunnel of Love is not the album the ten million fans and buyers of Born in the USA have been waiting for and although it made it to the top of the charts, sold three million times and contained three top 40 hits let it be a moment in your career.
