Kabutochō , now officially Nihombashi-Kabutochō ( Japanese 日本 橋 兜 町 ) is a quarter of the Chūō district in the east of the Japanese prefecture of Tokyo . It is located in the eastern center of Tokyo and is the seat of the Tokyo Stock Exchange . “Kabutochō” is often used figuratively to denote the stock exchange, similar to how “ Wall Street ” is used as a synonym for the New York Stock Exchange. The postal code of Kabutocho is 103-0026. As of June 1, 2011, there were 519 inhabitants in 420 households according to the registration statistics.

Kabutochō is about halfway between Tokyo Station in the west and Sumida , it comprises a narrow strip of city blocks that extends from the Nihombashi in the northeast to near the Yaesu-dōri , which leads straight away from the Yaesu entrance of Tokyo Station. The north-western border forms the inner ring ( toshinkanjō-sen ) of the Tokyo city motorway . In the southeast, Kabutochō borders (Nihombashi-) Kayabachō. The stock exchange is close to the banks of the Nihombashi, the district is also home to the Chūō Police Station of the Tokyo Prefectural Police and the Chūō Fire Station of the Tokyo Fire Department, as well as a municipal elementary school and kindergarten. The rest of the district is mainly filled with office buildings.

According to tradition, the name Kabutochō, or “Helmstadt” or “street”, goes back to the 11th century: During the “Early Nine Years War” to conquer Ōshū , Minamoto no Yoshiie was caught by a storm and asked Ryūjin (the Drachengott ”) by sinking armor for a safe return. On the way back from the victorious campaign against the Abe , he had armor buried in a hill as thanks. Since Kabutochō the time of the city of Tokyo to the city district Nihombashi belonged, he was, in 1947 as Nihombashi and Kyōbashi were merged with the county Chūō, like most districts in the former district of Nihombashi officially Nihombashi- prefixed.
