background

Springsteen said of the album at the launch of the film at the Rome Film Festival:

“The most fun was finding the music when we put the whole thing back together, which we worked really hard on back then, but which didn't fit on the record. The songs actually make their own album. They were arranged very carefully and so much was just lying around over the past 30 years. It was great to put everything together and show it to the fans. "

Criticism

  • Thom Jurek ( Allmusic ): The Promise stands on its own as a great Bruce Springsteen record. (The Promise stands on its own as a large Bruce Springsteen take.)
  • Alex Denney ( BBC Review): An indispensible portrait of an artist at the top of his game. (An indispensable portrait of an artist at the height of his work.)
  • Mark Richardson ( Pitchfork ): This is a trove, a vast clearing house from a fertile period, the product of which turned out to be one terrific album. (That's a treasure, a reckoning from a fertile period, the product that turns out to be a great album.)
  • Josef Gasteiger ( laut.de ): That Bruce Springsteen nevertheless throws away songs that other artists would kill for is the truth of rock'n'roll carved in stone.
