Time Out of Mind is the 30th studio album of Bob Dylan , which at 1997 Columbia Records has been published. It is one of the most acclaimed works of his long career and was u. a. awarded three Grammys .

On this album Dylan released his own compositions for the first time since the album Under the Red Sky , which was released in 1990 . After a lengthy artistic crisis that began in the mid-1980s, he found his way back to a new musical style and, with new songs, was once again a success with fans and critics alike.

Musically, Time Out of Mind is Dylan's second album after Oh Mercy from 1989, which belongs to the genre Americana . He combines elements of folk, rock, blues and country to create a very unique style that differs significantly from that of other musicians in the genre. What is striking about this album is the dark and almost melancholy voice and the often strong echo on songs like Standing in the Doorway . In addition, despite intensive session work, many songs should deliberately sound like improvised, which can be heard especially at the beginning of some pieces, e.g. B. Highlands and Dirt Road Blues .

In 1997 Rolling Stone and Uncut listed it as the best album on their respective annual lists. In Mojo , it ranked on the 2nd place.

background

Although the album Oh Mercy, released in 1989, was well received by listeners and critics and differed positively from his heavily criticized albums of the 80s because of its undisputed quality, Dylan did not pick up the style of the album on the direct successor Under the Red Sky , but he tried to create a new one, but it didn't work. As a result, he did not release any new songs for over seven years. In an interview with Paul Zollo in April 1991, he said that he was seriously wondering if anyone wanted to hear his songs at all, and that he had probably reached a point where he had written enough songs. Two folk albums followed, which contained American traditionals and thus only works by foreign authors.

In the winter of 1996 he wrote most of the time on the songs for Time Out of Mind . All the pieces were recorded in Miami with producer Daniel Lanois, with whom he had already recorded Oh Mercy . However, the two albums are stylistically very different from each other; despite the common genre, they can hardly be confused. This is due to the different atmosphere and technical subtleties such as the use of echoes or the general instrumentation.

The songs

Dylan's third double LP Time Out of Mind contains eleven songs with a running time of almost 73 minutes. With two exceptions (Dirt Road Blues and Make You Feel My Love) all songs have a duration of over five minutes. The final song, Highlands, was the longest song Dylan had released until then, with a duration of 16½ minutes. Often seen as a lyrical experiment, it was compared to earlier pieces of similar length such as Desolation Row (on Highway 61 Revisited ) and Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands ( Blonde on Blonde ) .

In addition to love songs that are often very blues-emphasized, such as Million Miles or Standing in the Doorway , the album also features ambiguous works such as Not Dark Yet , the lyrics of which can be taken literally, but still leave room for interpretation. The lyrics reach the usual depth and quality that one had already known from Dylan, and yet the lyrics on this album differ from previous ones. This time surrealistic and often grotesque passages do not appear. The only piece that could go in that direction is Highlands . When Dylan reports about an encounter with a waitress - but instead of a bizarre odyssey, such as in Bob Dylan's 115th Dream (on the album Bringing It All Back Home ), the moment rather develops into an everyday scenario that nonetheless becomes something special, even if known.

Charts and awards

The album went platinum in the US and gold in the UK and reached # 10 on the charts in both countries. In Germany it even reached number 6. The best position came in Norway with number 2 in the album charts.

The positive feedback from fans and critics culminated in the fact that the album received three awards at the 40th Grammy Awards in 1998. In addition to those for the album of the year and for the best contemporary folk album, Dylan also received the award for the best male vocal performance in rock for the song Cold Irons Bound .
