Planet Waves is the 14th studio album of Bob Dylan . It was produced by Rob Fraboni and first released on Asylum Records in January 1974 . However, when Dylan moved back to Columbia Records in the same year , this label took over the release of Planet Waves from that point on .
On the album, Dylan plays with The Band as a backing band. It was the first of a total of three albums that Dylan recorded and released with The Band. In the same year the live album Before the Flood followed , in 1975 those recordings were officially released that Dylan had made with the band in 1967 after his motorcycle accident. They were called The Basement Tapes .
The album was Dylan's first number one album in the US . The reviews have been good, if not enthusiastic. After weak previous works such as Self Portrait and Dylan, Planet Waves seemed refreshing and strong again. It contained a song called Forever Young , which was later covered by many famous musicians, such as B. by Joan Baez , The Band or the Grateful Dead . Dylan released two versions of the piece on Planet Waves ; a slow ballad and a faster version. The slower one eventually became the better known.
Originally the album was supposed to be called Ceremonies of the Horseman , after a line in his 1965 song Love Minus Zero / No Limit. When Dylan changed the title to Planet Waves overnight , the album's release was delayed by two weeks.
The music magazine Rolling Stone gave Planet Waves three stars out of five. Allmusic rated the album 3.5 out of 5 stars.
