John Wesley Harding is a studio album released in December 1967 by Bob Dylan . After a phase dominated by rock music and a break after his motorcycle accident, Dylan appeared here for the first time as a country musician.

The lyrics on the album are noticeably influenced by the Bible. The song All Along The Watchtower became really famous through the version by Jimi Hendrix . Dylan also often plays it in its version at concerts.

All songs on the album are poems set to music. Dylan originally wrote it without any musical accompaniment. Because of this, none of the pieces have a refrain.

The title of the album refers to the gunslinger John Wesley Hardin . The heavy metal band Judas Priest borrowed its name from the title The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest .
