John Forbes Royle.

John Forbes Royle (born May 20, 1798 in Kanpur , India , † January 2, 1858 in Acton , Middlesex ) was an English botanist and doctor . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Royle ".

Life

Royle joined the British East India Company as an assistant doctor . He studied botany and geology. From 1823 to 1832 he was head of the Botanical Garden of Saharanpur . In 1834 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . From 1837 to 1856 he held a professorship at King's College London . At the London World's Fair of 1851 he headed the Indian representation. His main work is the Illustrations of the Botany and other branches of Natural History of the Himalayan Mountains , created from 1833 to 1840 .

His son Peter Royle became a well-known doctor.

Honors

The genus Roylea Wall. ex Benth. from the mint family (Lamiaceae) is named after him. In addition, the zoologist William Ogilby named the Royle pika ( Ochotona roylii ) after him.
