Knocked Out Loaded is Bob Dylan's 24th studio album , released in July 1986 by Columbia Records . Numerous critics rated it as the album Dylan put the least effort into. The 11-minute Brownsville Girl, which he wrote with Sam Shepard , is considered one of his best songs.

Content and background

The recordings for Knocked Out Loaded come from different sessions. Driftin 'Too Far from Shore was taken from the outtake material of the previous album Empire Burlesque from 1985; the rest of the song material was recorded in two Californian recording studios from the end of April to the end of May 1986. Around three dozen guest musicians were involved in the production, including the band Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and a children's choir. The record itself was heavily influenced by foreign compositions, including You Wanna Ramble by Little Junior Parker, an old blues piece from 1954, and They Killed Him, a little-known song by country musician Kris Kristofferson .

The album was almost unanimously rated by the critics as thoroughly unsuccessful. Only the song Brownville Girl was explicitly excluded from the critics - a roughly 11-minute piece that is roughly in the range of Desolation Row and Sad Eyed Lady Of the Lowlands . The author Olaf Benzinger, who in his book on the singer's music comes to the fore, places the production of Knocked Out Loaded at the beginning of a phase that was strongly characterized by creative idleness. A personal follow-up event for Bob Dylan was his marriage in June 1986 to background singer Carolyn Dennis, who was involved in the production of the album.
