The Times They Are a-Changin ' Another Side of Bob Dylan
(1964)

The Times They Are a-Changin ' is the third studio album by American songwriter Bob Dylan , released in January 1964 . In contrast to the first two albums, it only contains original compositions.

The album cemented Dylan's reputation as the main protest singer and leader of the youth movement. The songs are about militarism, racism problems and social injustice.

In The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll he described e.g. For example, the fate of the black waitress, who was beaten to death by a 23-year-old drunk white farmer in 1963 because she served him too slowly, was dramatic. Dylan protested against racism and the mild sentence of manslaughter. The farmer concerned, William Zantzinger, died on January 3, 2009.

With the very personal song Boots of Spanish Leather , Dylan also showed his new artistic direction, which should lead him away from the uncomfortable role of being the “voice of a generation”.

Recording sessions

Dylan began recording his third album on August 6, 1963 at Columbia Studios A in New York . The producer was Tom Wilson . In the first session, eight songs were recorded, but only North Country Blues was considered useful.

In another session the following day, Ballad of Hollis Brown , With God on Our Side , Only a Pawn in Their Game and Boots of Spanish Leather were recorded.

A third session took place on August 12th, but nothing useful emerged. The songs recorded that day Paths of Victory, Moonshine Blues and Only A Hobo were then released in 1991 on The Bootleg Series Volumes 1-3 (Rare & Unreleased) 1961-1991 .

After that, Dylan went on tour and gave a series of concerts. He only returned to the studio on October 23rd, after having composed six more songs. From this session came The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll and When the Ship Comes In on the album, Percy's song was released in 1985 on the compilation Biograph .

The Times They Are a-Changin ' and One Too Many Mornings were taken over from the session the following day . The tracks Eternal Circle and Suze (The Cough Song) , also recorded that day, were released on The Bootleg Series Volumes 1-3 and Lay Down Your Weary Tune on Biograph .

The last recording session on October 31st focused entirely on the song Restless Farewell . The melody for it was taken from the Irish-Scottish folk song The Parting Glass .
