content

Of the total of 58 titles, 46 are outtakes from previous studio recordings. With one exception, the remaining tracks are live recordings and demo recordings. Three of them were later duplicated on The Bootleg Series Vol. 9 - The Witmark Demos: 1962–1964 .

The collection appeared in 1991 to satisfy a very common desire for Dylan's unpublished materials. The collection includes rare and unpublished work from recording sessions from Dylan's 1962-1989 debut and the Oh Mercy album . Unlike other Bootleg Editions, The Bootleg Series Volumes 1–3 are only available together as a three CD collection.
