Before the Flood is a 1974 live album by Bob Dylan and The Band . The recordings were made as part of the joint tour in 1974 and were initially released on Asylum Records.
Origin and content
After working together on the recently released Dylan album Planet Waves , Dylan and The Band began a joint tour across the United States after eight years. It comprised 40 concerts from the beginning of January to mid-February 1974. For Dylan it was the first tour after his motorcycle accident in 1966. The concerts were sold out within a very short time, and the demand was probably many times higher than the ticket quota.
The Band no longer acted solely as a backing band for Dylan on this tour, but played several songs from their own repertoire while Dylan took a break. At the beginning Dylan integrated some of his new songs from the Planet Waves album into the performances, but these disappeared almost completely from the program over the course of the tour. Dylan's outrageous, sometimes non-melodic and unrecognizable interpretations of his own songs caused criticism or at least a stir.
The recordings on Before the Flood are almost exclusively from the last two concerts of the tour, which took place on February 14th in Los Angeles .
