Infidels ( English for unbelievers') is the 1983 released 22 studio album of Bob Dylan . It was the first so-called “secular” album after his turn to Christianity and hardly influenced by this “Jesus phase” (1979–1981). Producer Mark Knopfler from Dire Straits ensured a contemporary sound. Among the musicians are guitarist Mick Taylor and two well-known reggae musicians, Robbie Shakespeare on bass and Sly Dunbar on drums, better known as Sly & Robbie , who determine the sound of the album.

An elaborate music video was produced for the song Jokerman . Dylan also played the piece live on the David Letterman show.

The Neighborhood Bully text is often viewed as Dylan's defense of the State of Israel . When asked about it in an interview with the music magazine Rolling Stone , Dylan replied that he was not a political songwriter and Neighborhood Bully was not a political song.

The album was awarded a gold record by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on January 23, 1984 .

review

Www.allmusic.com writes about Infidels :

“For a while, Infidels seems like a Latter-day masterpiece, but by the end of the recording it runs out of steam and prevents a triumph of its own. Nevertheless, compared to everything from the last decade, Infidels is a triumph, Dylan finds tempting proximity to his possibilities again. "
