No Jacket Required is the third solo album by British singer Phil Collins . It was released at the beginning of 1985. In addition to the successor … But Seriously from 1989, it is Collins' best known and most successful solo album. Due to the very time-oriented music, it is considered a synonym for the music of the 1980s. All four singles released reached the top 10 in the USA, two of them even reached first place on the local Billboard charts.

production

Like Collins' first two solo albums, No Jacket Required was co-produced by Collins with Hugh Padgham. It was recorded between May and December 1984. Some of the songs on the album were partly improvised. Sting on Long Long Way to Go and Peter Gabriel , a former bandmate at Genesis , on the song Take Me Home could be won as guest musicians . The album was also offered on CD in 1985 parallel to the release as LP, which, in contrast to the record release, also contains the song We Said Hello Goodbye . In the same year, Collins released Separate Lives , a duet with Marilyn Martin, another number one hit in the US. The title appeared on the soundtrack to the film White Nights and was recorded by Collins during the ongoing tour.

Music genre

No Jacket Required is more commercially oriented compared to the previous albums. The songs are more pop-oriented and lack the cynical undertone of the earlier works. In contrast to his first two albums, it does not contain an instrumental piece or cover versions of songs by other artists. While Collins especially on Face Value , but partly also on Hello, I Must Be Going! , who processed the divorce from his then wife, No Jacket Required conveys an overall more optimistic mood than its two predecessors.

successes

The album immediately hit number one in the US, UK and Germany and sold even faster than Michael Jackson's thriller . Furthermore, the album became number 1 in countries such as Canada, Switzerland and Sweden. With Sussudio and One More Night he recorded two number one hits in the USA, which no other artist achieved this year. The album won three Grammy Awards in 1986, with only two nominations ultimately failing to win. In the US, it reached a diamond record for over 10 million albums sold. In Germany it achieved triple platinum status (1.5 million).

tour

The No Jacket Required World Tour '85 began on 11 February 1985 in Nottingham in the UK and led the singers through Europe, Asia and North America. Collins also played five concerts in Germany on this tour. In total, the five-month tour included more than 80 concerts. The tour concluded with a performance on July 13, 1985 at the Live Aid concert in London. In addition to songs from Collins' previously released solo albums, the setlist also included songs by his band Genesis (e.g. Abacab ) and various cover versions (e.g. People Get Ready by The Impressions). Furthermore, almost all of the songs on the album No Jacket Required were performed live on this tour .

Quotes

"You know, I was happily married to Jill, my wife when I wrote that song, but I got divorced, my manager got divorced, some good friends got divorced, and I was just like," What's up ? Doesn't anyone stay together anymore? " This is how the song came about. "

- Phil Collins in an interview with Playboy in October 1986 about the inspiration for the song Doesn't Anybody Stay Together Anymore? (German translation)

" You know, I was very happily married to Jill, my present wife, when I wrote it, but I had been divorced, my manager was getting divorced, a couple of good friends were getting divorced, and I thought, What's going on? Doesn't anybody stay together anymore? The song came from that. "

- Original quotation from Phil Collins in the Playboy interview

"His effortless bribe by jumping from cheerful white R&B to strange, unexpected melodies is instinctively commercial, but never seems artificial."

- David Fricke in Rolling Stone magazine on May 9, 1985 (German translation)

" His effortless graft of bright white-R & B bounce to quirky, unexpected melodies is instinctively commercial but never feels overly contrived. "

- Original review by David Fricke of Rolling Stone in English
