Most of the songs on the album are previously released singles from Phil Collins' previous albums Face Value (one track), Hello, I Must Be Going! (one song), Against All Odds (OST) (one song), No Jacket Required (three tracks), Buster (OST) (two songs), … But Seriously (three songs), Both Sides (one track) and Dance into the Light (a song). Only the song True Colors was re-recorded for the album.

… Hits entered the German album charts at number three on October 19, 1998. On November 2, 1998, the record reached its highest position from second place. Hits debuted on the Billboard 200 in the week ending October 24, 1998 at number 18. On August 4, 2012, the album reached number six in the American album charts following a discount campaign by Amazon . The sound carrier also reached the top of the charts in Finland, New Zealand, the Netherlands and Sweden.
