Separate Lives is a soft rock song of Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin from the year 1985 and comes from the soundtrack to the movie White Nights - The night of the decision . The song reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1985 and number 4 on the UK Top 40 .

Separate Lives was nominated for an award for Best Song at the 1986 Academy Awards, but lost to Lionel Richie classic Say You, Say Me .

The song was produced by Arif Mardin , who also produced Phil Collins's Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now) , and written by Stephen Bishop , who released a cover version of the song himself in 1994 .

The song has been covered by Sally Rogers (1986), Martin Nievera (1999) and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (2000) , among others .
