Both Sides (in English: "both sides") is the fifth studio album by British singer Phil Collins . It was published in November 1993. It sold a total of at least ten million copies, was triple platinum in Germany, double platinum in Great Britain and platinum in the USA .

background

Both Sides was the only one of his albums to be produced entirely by Phil Collins himself, with all of the instruments being recorded by himself. The recordings took place over a period of six weeks in his own studio at home, which also makes the sound of the album a little different from the others. Only sound engineer Paul Gomershall, who was involved in the previously released live album Serious Hits Live , and assistant Mark Robinson, involved in We Can't Dance , helped him. The songs turned out to be a bit more edgy and unpolished. The meaning of the songs is explained in the booklet. The lyrics express Collins' personal feelings and private problems, but political issues are also touched upon. He had 17 songs available, but discarded those that didn't match the "underlying mood" of the album.

Collins said in a November 1993 Playboy interview with Peter Jebsen:

“Of course I could have brought in people like Eric Clapton , who would certainly have contributed beautiful passages. But on this LP the songs are extremely personal; and I wanted to avoid the risk that the involvement of others would water down the original feeling. "

criticism

  • Allmusic wrote: “Some fans might not go along with Collins on this dark ride, but Both Sides is one of his most artistically satisfying albums.” (“Some fans might not follow Collins on his dark ride, but Both Sides is one of his artistically most satisfying albums. ”) The album was given three stars out of five.
  • The Rolling Stone awarded 2.5 out of five stars.
  • The New Musical Express wrote: "That asthmatic synth gurgling, the drum-beating that snaps for climaxes and the melody, as little sparkling as a mineral water bottle open for three days, have become tiring."
