Hello, I Must Be Going! is the second studio album by British singer Phil Collins . It was released on November 1, 1982 as a long-playing record and in June 1988 as a CD .

Emergence

After the publication of his solo debut Face Value in 1981, Collins devoted himself primarily to his band Genesis again in 1981 and 1982 . After completing a tour with the band, it was time for Collins to continue his solo career with another album. Again he teamed up for the production of the album with Hugh Padgham, who began working as a producer for Genesis the following year and whose collaboration continued on all remaining releases of the decade of Collins and Genesis.

content

Similar to Face Value , Collins mainly processes his experiences regarding the divorce from his first wife on this album. Lyrically, the cover version of the Supremes classic You Can't Hurry Love , which became the album's greatest success, does not fit into this scheme . In contrast to the other songs, The West Side is half an instrumental .

For the name of the album, Collins was inspired by a song by Groucho Marx from the soundtrack of the same name to the film Animal Crackers by the Marx Brothers . The album cover shows Collins in profile on a blue background, whose face can be seen on the left half of the cover.

The album received mostly positive reviews. An example of this is the review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine from Allmusic , who said of the album:

"[...] While some of the material was successful, much of it showed that he was still coming to grips with how to incorporate R&B techniques into his style; in retrospect, Hello, I Must Be Going! laid the groundwork for his breakthrough album, No Jacket Required. "

and rated the album 3.5 stars out of five.
