... But Seriously (Engl. For "... But seriously") is the fourth studio album by British rock singer Phil Collins . It was released on November 7, 1989. With over three million copies sold (6 times platinum ), it is the second most successful album in Germany since the official awards were introduced in 1975. Worldwide it is the most successful album after its predecessor No Jacket Required that Collins produced in his solo career.

Emergence

After Collins and his band Genesis in 1986 and 1987 experienced one of the greatest successes of his musical career with the album Invisible Touch and the accompanying tour, he started his fourth solo album in spring 1988, which he again produced together with Hugh Padgham. While Collins needed a few months to record his previous albums, he worked on the song material for ... But Seriously for a year and a half. Only the recordings of Collins' last studio album with his own songs Testify (2002) took even more time.

Similar to previous albums, he got the support of some well-known musicians: Stephen Bishop is on Do You Remember? , David Crosby on That's Just the Way It Is and Another Day in Paradise heard as a background singer. Steve Winwood , who plays the Hammond organ on All of My Life , and Eric Clapton , who can be heard on guitar on I Wish It Would Rain Down, were also involved in the album .

Music genre

On his first three solo albums, Collins mainly addressed interpersonal relationships, which mainly resulted from the separation of his then wife in the early 1980s, on this album he mainly deals with serious issues such as homelessness and war scenarios as well as socio-economic and political problems. The album title already indicates this change in Collins' music. With Do You Remember? and I Wish It Would Rain Down , the work contains just two of Collins' classic love songs about the pain of separation.

Also musically, Collins went different ways than on his predecessors and consciously played the tracks instead of with a drum computer by hand on the drums and also increasingly used the keyboard . … But Seriously also combines the instrumental piece Saturday Night and Sunday Morning and Colors, the shortest and longest piece from Collins' solo career on one album; the latter is musically comparable to the progressive rock he played with his band Genesis.

Song information

  • That's Just the Way It Is : According to Collins, he wrote the song after seeing nothing new in the American anti-war film The West . Thematically, this song deals with the feelings and thoughts of soldiers in war.
  • Something Happened on the Way to Heaven was originally written as the closing song for the movie Der Rosenkrieg with Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito. However, the piece was rejected by the film producers and thus appeared unplanned on this album instead of on the film's soundtrack. This is the only song on the album that was created in collaboration with Daryl Stuermer.
  • For All of My Life and Father to Son , there are two very personal songs of the artist. All of My Life deals with the relationship with his late father and the feeling that you only realized afterwards that he had not spent enough time with him. Father to Son Collins wrote for his son Simon; it contains a lot of advice that he would like to give his son on the way.

tour

A good quarter of a year later, the album was released by Seriously Live! World Tour, during which Collins visited three continents with 113 concerts and also gave six concerts in Germany. The tour first performed on February 23, 1990 in Nagoya , Japan . The world tour ended on October 3, 1990 with a concert in New York's Madison Square Garden .

As with all other Genesis and solo tours, Collins got the support of the drummer Chester Thompson and the guitarist Daryl Stuermer on this tour. The tour's setlist was relatively extensive with more than 20 songs and, in contrast to Collins 'previous tours, focused almost exclusively on material from Collins' previous solo albums. The material for the tour was the live album Serious Hits… Live! and the VHS cassette Seriously Live in Berlin , which was recorded at the concert on July 15, 1990 in the Berlin Waldbühne . The concert was re-released on September 22, 2003 with new 5.1 surround sound and various bonus material under the title Serious Hits… Live as a double DVD.
