Klein started his musical career as a teenager by appearing as a session musician and playing the bass guitar on a number of records , among the most important productions was his participation in several recordings by jazz trumpeter Freddie Hubbard ( Pinnacle: Live & Unreleased from Keystone Korner ).

Klein met Joni Mitchell , where he was hired as bassist and sound engineer for her 1982 album Wild Things Run Fast . They married in November 1982.
