Mary Black

Mary Black (born May 22, 1955 in Dublin ) is an Irish singer .

Life

She was born into a musical family. Her father was a violinist from Rathlin Island in Northern Ireland , her mother a singer. Mary Black's sister Frances Black is also a successful singer. Her brothers had their own group. At the age of eight, Mary sang folk songs taught by her brother Shay. In her youth she sang in her family group.

Mary Black's career began in the Dublin folk clubs. The first solo album entitled Mary Black was released in 1983 and reached number 4 on the Irish charts . For this LP she got gold . In 1986 she started her solo career after being a member of the traditional Irish folk band De Dannan . Mary Black's album No Frontiers , released in 1989, climbed to the top of the Irish album charts, where it stayed in the top 30 for 56 weeks , and went triple platinum . Mary Black is to this day (2008) a particularly popular singer in Ireland. Their music style ranges from jazz to country music . So far (as of April 2007) she has received platinum seven times for her solo albums .
