De Dannan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

De Dannan , originally Dé Danann , is an Irish folk band that has produced several successful soloists such as Maura O'Connel , Mary Black , Caroline Lavelle and Dolores Keane . The name refers to Túatha Dé Danann , Irish for the Irish indigenous people.

history

The band was formed in 1974 in the Irish-speaking Spiddal , County Galway . Founding members were the violinist Frankie Gavin, Alec Finn ( bouzouki ), Charlie Piggott ( banjo , flute ) and Johnny McDonagh ( bodhrán ). Singers changed several times. The debut album featured Dolores Keane, followed by Andy Irvine and Johnny Moynihan. In the early 1980s, De Dannan had great success with the singer Maura O'Connel, especially with the Irish population in the USA . Her album, Star-Spangled Molly , paid homage to Ireland's contribution to American culture. Until 1986 Mary Black was the front woman of the band. The band expanded their repertoire by using other styles of music such as klezmer or baroque music .

In the 1990s, with Colm Murphy instead of McDonagh at the bodhrán, the bands recorded versions of pop hits in Irish guise. Thus, from the Queen -Hit Bohemian Rhapsody , the Hibernian Rhapsody . In 2000, The Eagles were the inspiration for the Hotel Connemara with their song Hotel California .

The band split in 2003 and in 2008 the band's first line-up was featured on an Irish Postage stamp. In the same year began a dispute about the use of the band name, which was also legally led. Alec Finn had the band name protected after the split. Frankie Gavin wanted to use the name for his own band, which had previously performed as the Hibernian Rhapsody .

Since 2010 Alec Finn and Johnny McDonagh have been working with other musicians under the name “De Da n ann” on stage and in the studio. In 2012 Frankie Gavin put together his own group under the name “De Da nn an”. with whom he performs and has released albums. Different variations of the band names were used, including The Old De Dannan (with Alec Finn and Johnny McDonagh, without Frankie Gavin), Frankie Gavin's De Dannan , Frankie Gavin and the new De Dannan , Frankie Gavin & De Dannan .
