An Spidéal ([ ən̪ ˈspʲidʲeːɫ ] official name; English: Spiddal or Spiddle ) is a small town on the west coast of Ireland, 19 kilometers west of Galway on the eastern border of Connemara . An Spidéal has 237 inhabitants (as of 2016).

Surname

The name An Spidéal ("the hospital") comes from the Irish word for hospital ( ospidéal ), which was there centuries ago.

archeology

In the townland of An Liopa Thoir east of An Spidéal, Jimmy Ó Céide discovered a Crannóg possibly 4,000 years old after a storm in 2020 .

economy

At Spidéal lies in the Gaeltacht Cois Fharraige . Every year, many students from other parts of Ireland come here to improve their knowledge of Irish .

There is a fishing port and a small beach with parking. Opposite is the Spiddal Craft Center .

Personalities

  • Máirtín Ó Cadhain (1906–1970) was born near An Spidéal. He was one of the most important Irish language writers of the 20th century.
