Mhairi Black (March 2015)

Mhairi Black (born September 12, 1994 in Paisley , Scotland ) is a Scottish politician ( SNP ). Black pronounces her Scottish Gaelic first name Mhairi [ vaːɾʲɪ ] like Mary in English .

Life

In the British general election in 2015 , she was elected the youngest member of the House of Commons . At the time of the election she was a student and, at 20 years and 237 days, one of the youngest MPs since the House of Commons was founded; there were no younger ones in the 20th and 21st centuries.

Black won the House of Commons in the constituency of Paisley and Renfrewshire South with 50.9% of the vote, by a large margin ahead of Douglas Alexander (38.6%), a political heavyweight of the Labor Party , shadow foreign minister and campaign manager for the party. In the last general election, Alexander had won the constituency superiorly. Black achieved one of the highest voter changes between the two leading parties (swing) with 26.9% . In the early general election in 2017 , Black maintained her mandate despite losing votes.

motivation

Because of her family, she has been interested in politics since childhood. When she was nine, she took part in an anti- Iraq war demo. The family had been Labor Party supporters for generations. Dissatisfaction with this party grew so strong that she joined the Scottish National Party with her father .

She justifies her motivation to become more politically active as follows:

“People have been battered by a system that doesn't care about them and they've had enough of austerity. You can feel the frustration that people have, that the principles have been abandoned by Labor. My dad is a lifelong Labor voter: my family was all proper Clydeside-shipyards Labor. "

“People have been disadvantaged by a system that doesn't care about them and they are fed up with austerity . You sense people's frustration that Labor has given up its policies. My father was a Labor voter all his life: my family members were all decent Clydeside shipbuilders and Labor supporters. "

Black studied Political Science at the University of Glasgow . She wrote her thesis on how the SNP has dealt with the increase in membership in recent years. She successfully completed her studies in June 2015.

Black was politically inspired by Keir Hardie , Tony Benn and Margo MacDonald .
